What is being a Digital Nomad?
Who doesn't dream of travelling wherever they want and working as a digital nomad? Because more and more people are embracing this new lifestyle of digital nomadism.
After the pandemic, many people had the chance to work hybrid or only from home, in some cases providing and allowing this freedom to live anywhere.
Even so, many people are still on the road to realising this dream. So, in this post I'm going to show you the possibilities and how to join this new lifestyle of being a digital nomad.
What is a Digital Nomad?
Digital nomadism is not a specific profession but a lifestyle that allows you to work remotely and from anywhere in the world, i.e. you work online and can live in any country you wish.
What you should take into consideration is choosing a destination that has good internet and electricity stability. Along with your lifestyle: a comfortable place with a climate you like, you need to think about the way you want to live.
How to work while travelling
There are many options for working online, whether it's having an online shop, being an affiliate for a product or service, or freelancing.
1 - Volunteer
You can volunteer somewhere that needs it. For example, through the Workaway you can work in exchange for accommodation and meals. In other words, you can find different options for your stay, regardless of your age. All you have to do is register and apply for the country you want to go to.
There are also options for housesitting and petsitting, i.e. looking after someone's house or pet while the owners are travelling. If you're more of a rural person, there's also a platform where you can apply for work in exchange for accommodation. here.
2 – Freelancer
Another option here is to work as a freelancer. The best way to make a decision here is to see what you like to do and what function you have the best skills for and apply online, whether it's freelance or remote work.
There are several website options for applying for work online, such as Upwork, Workana, PeoplePerHour, Fiverramong others. Discover your skills and throw yourself into the world.
3 - Teaching online
This work can be extra, but it can also become your main way of earning money to live while travelling. If you play some kind of instrument, have a language that you master very well and can help other people. Or you have a skill that can be shared and monetised, this could be a good potential way to earn money.
As well as other platforms, there are also some sites you can sign up to
4 - Online shop or become an Affiliate
This option is for people who have a physical shop or who are just starting out. You can set up an online shop and sell clothes, lingerie, products and accessories, a multitude of materials.
Or if you've taken an online course that you liked and you don't want to produce content for yourself, you can start selling the product of someone you know or who has taken the course and earn a commission from it.
You can find out more about this option on the Hotmart website here.
5 - Possibility of making your office work remote
If you already work in an office and have a steady job, you may see possibilities for migrating from face-to-face to remote work. Can you get things done in another country? In a different time zone? If so, this is a good way to start your nomadic life.
How To Choose The Best Country And City To Live In
The best way to choose the place you want to live is to prioritise your desires and do your research to see if the city offers the essential things you need on a daily basis.
For example, if you work online, the place you choose needs to have a good Wi-Fi connection, stable electricity, etc. As well as which country you'd like to visit and the typical food you like best.
Some cities are more favoured and chosen by people to live this new style, some of them are in Chiang Mai in Thailand. Just like in PortugalNomads tend to relate cost benefits to quality of life.
In other words, they want to live well, freely and enjoy the place more when they're not working.
Challenges of digital nomad life
Some of the challenges you need to keep in mind and organise yourself to deal with this new lifestyle are: Routine, Unpredictability and Change of Accommodation. In other words, as easy and enjoyable as the lifestyle may seem, like everything else in life you need to adapt and anticipate your plans to be a nomad.
Discipline is essential if you want to be able to separate work and leisure time. The good news is that you can make your own timetable. As well as unpredictability, it's super important to set up an emergency reserve for expenses you might need. And finally, a change of accommodation is when you have to assemble and disassemble your rucksack or suitcase and adapt to a new location.
Conclusion
Being a digital nomad goes far beyond travelling and only going on holiday. It also requires planning and discipline, separating working hours and time to enjoy the place you've chosen. But it's super worth it if you're like me, have an adventurous spirit and love and can take on any challenge.
